Another option that saves money on housing is becoming an RA. It's a little risky since you have to interview for the position, but it's a great opportunity if you think it's for you. My old roommate became an RA and got 2 years of free housing because of it, plus a monthly stipend.

I think that it can be a good thing as well. However as you pointed out, it is not for everyone. But it can be good for some people and save you a ton of money. Also if you are receiving a stipend then even better.
